Gonzalo Higuaín missed a golden opportunity in the first half, had a goal disallowed and maybe should have had a penalty after German goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer wiped him out. Germany were given a free kick instead.

Messi was disappointing and Bastian Schweinsteiger was kicked and punched almost as often as the ball with yet more lenient refereeing. Sergio Agüero was lucky not to pick up a red after throwing an arm into the German midfielder’s face, which left him with a nasty cut.

It was Mario Götze though who scored a wonder goal deep into extra time, following André Schürrle’s driving run and early cross. 

A great end to a great tournament. Shame about the half hour wait for the trophy to be lifted though. Thanks for that, Fifa.
